Let's Go! Takes 5-2-1-0 to School

Let’s Go! Takes 5-2-1-0 to School is a component of the Let’s Go! initiative. The primary goal of the initiative is to increase physical activity and healthy eating amongst children and youth from birth to age 18.

The school intervention uses the 5-2-1-0 mnemonic to reinforce the importance of four positive health behaviors that are recommended to increase physical activity and healthy eating. Those include:

  • eating 5 fruits and vegetables per day
  • limiting screen time to 2 hours per day,
  • engaging in one hour of physical activity per day and
  • increasing water consumption as well as low fat milk while limiting sugar sweetened beverages.

5-2-1-0 Goes to School is a pilot project that was launched by the Kids CO-OP at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in nine schools in York County, Maine in 2006. Through their partnership with Let’s Go!, the BBCH has been able to update and expand upon the 5-2-1-0 Goes to School Toolkit that was offered to the pilot sites. The new Let's Go! Takes 5-2-1-0 to School Toolkit will be available to 12 communities in Greater Portland, Maine through the Let's Go! Initiative. All of the tools will also be available state-wide through this website and upon request.

Let’s Go! Takes 5-2-1-0 to School will address the policies, environments, and practices that influence these four important health behaviors in the school setting. Schools participate on a voluntary basis. Participating schools receive the comprehensive toolkit containing lesson plans, handouts, strategies and resources useful to incorporating the  5-2-1-0 message into the school day. They will receive workshops from the Let’s Go! Team and have the opportunity to apply for mini grants. The Let’s Go! Takes 5-2-1-0 to school Project Team provides the overall coordination, technical assistance and conduct the analysis/report findings of the evaluation data.
