WinteRush 2009
Winterfit, a nonprofit organization committed to helping our children develop lifelong habits of health, education, and physical fitness through outdoor winter activity, pulled together a great series of events, called it WinteRush 2009 and provided folks with activities meant to help them get out and get active during the freezing days of February.
WinteRush 2009, held from February 6 -14, highlights included:
DeLorme, a leading provider of mapping products, technologies, and data for the consumer and professional markets located in Yarmouth, will be hosting a geo-caching event some time during the week of 2/9.
Healthy Portland, a Healthy Maine Partnership operating out of the City of Portland’s Public Health Division, HHSD, Portland Public Schools, and Let’s Go!, the community-wide physical activity and nutrition initiative established by seven area companies, will provide various outdoor activities at City Hall Plaza, including the wheel of fun, a photo physical activity scavenger hunt, games and more. Chance to win prizes!
Maine Winter Sports Center is a nonprofit, founded in 1999 and exists with the continued support of the Libra Foundation. Their mission is to re-establish skiing as a lifestyle in Maine. Maine Winter Sports Center will be hosting a paintball biathlon in Deering Oaks Park.
Portland Recreation provides recreation and aqautic activities for all ages in Portland. They maintain and schedule all athletic facilities including the Portland Ice Arena. Portland Rec. will be hosting activities in Lincoln Park. Highlights include igloo building, snowball fights, snow painting, and snowman building.
Portland Trails is a member supported nonprofit land trust that builds and maintains trails in Greater Portland. The organization was founded in 1991 and has over 30 miles of trails in its network. Portland Trails will host a snowshoe demonstration and provide education around winter activities available on trails in Post Office Park.
Ski Maine Association is the statewide Trade Association representing the Alpine and Nordic ski industry in Maine with a mission to increase availability and enjoyment of Maine skiing. Ski Maine will be coordinating Nordic activities at Payson Park.
Portland Public Schools Nutrition Director, Ronald Adams, along with Let's Go! put together concession menus that ranked food by Go, Slow, and Whoa categories, indicating which items would be a better choice. To see examples of the menus, click here.
WinterKids is a nonprofit organization committed to helping our children develop lifelong habits of health, education, and physical fitness through outdoor winter activity. WinterKids will join Sunday River in Payson Park and will be hosting lots of great winter games and activities.
