Story Walk, a 5210 Goes to School activity, was provided for all students at Houlton Elementary School on April 17, 2009. The story walk project was part of the annual health fair held at the school for all students in Grades PreK-3. The physical education teacher, Shari Good, and the School Health Coordinator, Lynn Brown, worked collaboratively on the project, which was one activity used to promote the 5210 Goes to School Program. This program is being implemented at all elementary schools in MSAD#29 during the spring months and is sponsored by Healthy Aroostook, the Healthy Maine Partnership community coalition. Many activities, such as this one, are being carried out at all schools in the district, as part of the Coordinated School Health Program, to increase physical activity and healthy eating.
To complete the Story Walk, materials were ordered, permission was granted from the publisher and pages from the book, Scoot! were photocopied and laminated. The pages were then attached to the story boards and placed in the ground all over Kindergarten Hill, which is located on a side hill beside the school. Students were lead from page to page while reading, moving and acting out the action verbs in the story. "This project was a great activity to integrate physical activity with literacy and ties well into the multi-year Reading First Grant to improve the reading/writing skills of all students." said Lynn Brown, School Health Coordinator. "More importantly, the students loved it!"
