Kennebunk Elementary strives for “1” in the classroom! Diane Dyer and the Wellness Committee, 5210 Champions for Kennebunk Elementary, are continually connecting classroom teachers with resources and opportunities to promote 5210 messages in their school. And the results are showing in the classrooms. Teachers are starting to incorporate physical activity into their classrooms and kids love it. Two great examples are 3rd grade teacher, Stacey Schatzabel, and 2nd Grade teacher, Beth Milburn. Stacey Schatzabel’s 3rd grade class starts each day with 30 minutes of physical activity and students enjoy a physical activity session after lunch. Throughout the day, many students sit on stability balls and are given a number of other physical activity opportunities. Beth Milburn’s 2nd grade class is incorporating physical activity into lessons with the help of resistance bands, an idea Diane Dyer got from a previous “Take Time” conference. The resistance bands were distributed to all teachers at Kennebunk Elementary during their Wellness Week, along with an instructional video created by Beth and Diane. The video trained staff on how the bands could be used in the classrooms. Since then, other teachers have joined in the movement.
Here are some great quotes from the programs:
"I think that taking motor breaks helps to stimulate the children's minds in a fun way and prepare their bodies and minds for new information."
Beth Milburn- second grade teacher
"Teaching math in the afternoon was very difficult. Students were fidgety and unfocused. Now we exercise after lunch for 20 minutes and then begin math. The students and I love math again."
Stacey Schatzabel--third grade teacher
"Sitting on a ball helps me concentrate and focus on doing my work.”
3rd grade student
“It makes me feel calm and ready."
2nd grade student
"It helps me get rid of my wiggles."
2nd grade student
