The 4th and 5th graders at Manchester School in Windham, Maine are lucky to have a very committed and enthusiastic Let’s Go! team that meets twice monthly to plan Let’s Go! activities for the whole school. The Manchester Team kicked off 2010 with the promotion of the 5-2-1-0 messages school wide.

The Team hosted an assembly that greeted students with members of the high school Student Wellness Team in fruit and vegetable costumes dancing to fun music. A 4th grade teacher introduced students to 5-2-1-0 and explained that each month in the new year would focus on a different number, January for 5, February for 2, March for 1, and April for 0. The final grand event in May will be the school’s annual health fair. Next the guest speaker, the district School Health Coordinator and Registered Dietitian had student volunteers help to demonstrate easy ways for students to understand and remember the 5-2-1-0 messages by using physical activity movements. The assembly was concluded with two teachers dressed in fruit and vegetable costumes leading students in singing the 5-2-1-0 song!

During lunchtime students were challenged to tally all of the fruits and vegetables they could count on their lunch trays and in their lunch boxes. The top three tables from each lunch with the most fruits and vegetables received prizes.

The school newspaper notified students and families that the school had purchased 11 pairs of snowshoes with a discount received from L.L. Bean and were looking to acquire enough to outfit an entire classroom. Within a few weeks 14 additional pairs of snowshoes were donated from families and staff to allow the school to have 25 pairs that will be available for classrooms to sign out.
