2008-2009 Mini-Grants Grant Awardee

City of Portland: Map, Compass, & Water Fountain Initiatives

Healthy Portland used their community mini-grant from Let's Go! to launch three initiatives around physical activity and water consumption.

Places to Go Map Project

Healthy Portland created a map of Portland, highlighting "places to play," some well-known and some hidden treasures, within the Portland city limits.Over 2,000 maps have been distributed thus far, with plans for further distribution in the works. For a PDF of the map, click here.

Compass Project

The City of Portland's Recreation Department purchased compasses, DVD, and instructional books, to use with school age children in "urban orienteering" coursese uring the 2009 WinteRush. The compass "kits" will be utilized in various settings e.g. summer camp, after school groups.

Water Fountain Project
Supported by a Let’s Go! community mini-grant, Healthy Portland, a local Healthy Maine Partnership and a program of the City of Portland’s Health & Human Service Department, Public Health Division, was able to install new water fountains at King Middle, Riverton Elementary and Nathan Clifford. As part of the 5-2-1-0 message, the City of Portland, Portland Public Schools and Let’s Go! are encouraging children to drink more water and less sugary drinks.
