Let's Go! 5-2-1-0 Goes to School
February 2008 Feature School
Saccarappa and Prides Corner, Westbrook, Maine
Saccarappa and Prides Corner, both K-2 schools, are focusing on the ‘0’ message: Drink less sugar and try water and low fat milk instead of soda and drinks with lots of sugar. In a concerted school wide effort, each child is getting a Let’s Go! water bottle and receiving education about why water and milk are the best drink choices for kids. Both schools are giving the water fountains a facelift to encourage students to use them. A parallel effort is being made in the school cafeterias to provide students with a consistent and friendly reminder about healthy choices.
The second graders in both schools were treated to a special visit by Dr. Youth, a local pediatrician who showed students how much sugar is in popular sodas and juices and showed them how to get their heart rates up in just a couple of minutes.
