DANCE, DANCE, REVOLUTION -- It's all the rage!
Ever wonder if 5210 Goes to School can be successful in a school with a highly diverse and varied socioeconomic status population? Riverton Elementary School has proven it possible! With 450 students representing 22 different languages and over 65% of students qualifying for free or reduced meals, not to mention budget cuts and limited time, School Nurse Judy Blackwell-Smith has used the 5210 Goes to School program to make remarkable strides. Not only are more and more birthdays being celebrated with fruit and vegetable platters, but there are no desserts automatically served on the lunch trays and the bulletin boards are loaded with catchy information about healthy eating and physical activity. Nurse Blackwell-Smith also took on the challenging task of removing sugar sweetened beverages from the vending machines. It started with removing the highest sugar content item, and soon became a water-only vending machine! Keep up the good work, Riverton. You've proved change is possible!
