Hospital Resources

Food Environment

Partnership for A Healthier America, Hospital Healthy Food Initiative: PHA is teaming up with hospitals and hospital food providers around the country to deliver more healthy options throughout their facilities. These organizations have committed to work over the next several years to improve the nutrition of patient meals as well as that of the food options in on-site cafeterias. This partnership, announced in fall 2012, represents the most drastic and expansive improvement in hospital nutrition to date, and will set the standard for future initiatives. Find out how this initiative is being implemented in Maine: Download PDF

Healthier Hospital Initiative: Healthier Food: The way food is produced, processed, packaged, distributed and consumed in the United States has significant impacts on human health. Nationally, the United States spends billions of dollars to treat diet-related, chronic diseases – $147 billion to treat obesity alone, another $116 billion to treat diabetes, and hundreds of billions to treat cardiovascular disease and cancer. To improve the health of patients, staff and communities, the Healthier Hospitals Initiative is teaming up with hospitals to encourage healthy food consumption.

Center for Nutrition and Healthy Food Systems: Fletcher Allen Health Care has developed this Center to educate other health care institutions about building a sustainable food service. Our goal is for the Center to be a national role model for healthy and sustainable food systems. The Center serves as an educational and operational link between health care and our local and regional food system.

Michigan Hospital Association (Healthy Food in Hospitals): Across Michigan, hospitals and health system leaders are demonstrating their commitment to a healthier Michigan by voluntarily implementing the Healthy Food Hospitals campaign for employees, patients and visitors.

Breastfeeding

For information on what it means to be a Breastfeeding hospital, click here.

The following trainings, ranging in length from 30 – 60 minutes, aim to help support your hospital's efforts to increase breastfeeding rates. These videos can help you achieve the 3 hours of provider training required for the World Health Organization's Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. Funding for these trainings was made possible by the Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare Foundation.
